The Kitchen Garden: Growing Your Own Vegetables

Taking home a basket of your own vegetables is the reason many buyers choose land over an apartment. It is very doable near Noida, with a little planning and someone on site.

Vegetable beds on a farm, Himachal Pradesh (reference)

The plains around Noida and Faridabad are fertile, and the long, mild winter is generous: spinach, methi, radish, carrots, peas, cauliflower, cabbage and mustard greens all grow well. Summer and the monsoon suit gourds, okra, brinjal and beans.

Start small. Four to six raised beds close to a water point are easier to keep than a large patch, and a caretaker or mali watering through the week matters more than anything you plant.

How to Plan It

Four Decisions That Make It Work

  1. 01 Sun and Water Six or more hours of sun, and a tap or drip line within reach. Drip irrigation saves water and time.
  2. 02 Test the Soil A basic soil test (pH, salinity) before planting. Some land near the Yamuna and in parts of Haryana is saline.
  3. 03 Raised Beds Beds lift roots above monsoon waterlogging and keep the garden tidy between visits.
  4. 04 Compost A compost pit for kitchen and garden waste feeds the beds for free.
